About Us
Assalamu alaikum.
ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
Welcome to the official website of the Corner Brook Islamic Center (CBIC).
CBIC is a registered non-profit organization serving the Muslim population of Corner Brook and surrounding areas on the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Since our humble beginnings in 2017 with just 40 members, CBIC has grown significantly to serve a diverse and vibrant community of over 400 individuals now. We are currently experiencing a growth rate of 20% each year, driven by:
Incoming healthcare professionals at the local hospital
International students, Faculty, and Staff at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland
Newcomers working in various local industries
Our community reflects a diverse Muslim diaspora, bringing together families and individuals from many cultures and backgrounds, united by faith and a commitment to building a welcoming spiritual home.
Our Journey (so far):
In the absence of a mosque, our community has come together and adapted creatively over the years. The situation is always precarious, as we need to rely on different facilities time to time, such as:
A private hall called Club 64 on Broadway
Taste East Grocery store at 7 Broadway
The Multifaith Room at Grenfell Campus
The Old Hospital Chapel
The store space on Broadway was lost in 2023. Club 64 is a busy and expensive venue to use all the times. Subsequently, Western Health authority has been generous enough to allow us access to their chapel for prayer. Similarly, Grenfell campus of Memorial continues it's support to ensure our prayer's space in its multifaith centre. Thus, the community currently offers prayers in two separate locations: the Multifaith Room at Grenfell Campus and the Old Hospital Chapel.
While we are grateful for these temporary spaces, these spaces are no longer sufficient due to our growing numbers. Prayer areas are frequently overcrowded, and scheduling has become a challenge, especially during Jumu’ah, Ramadan, and Eid gatherings.
CBIC has hosted numerous events such as Ramadan iftars, Eid celebrations, and other get togethers at rental venues in different locations of the city -- each reinforcing the need for a permanent space that accommodates both worship and community life.
A Mosque for Corner Brook:
We are now taking a historic step: building the first mosque in Corner Brook, located at 36 Clarence Street.
This dedicated mosque will include:
A prayer space for both men and women
A flexible area for children's Islamic schooling
A social hall for events, gatherings, and future programs
This mosque will not just be a place of worship — it will be the spiritual and communal heart of the Muslim population in western Newfoundland. It will also play a crucial role in preserving our Islamic culture and promoting Islamic education among our youth, ensuring that future generations remain rooted in their faith while contributing positively to Canadian society.
